Kinshasa “Sapeurs”

A group of young Congolese fashionistas that risk health and wealth to look fly.

They worship at the alter of Roberto Cavalli, and their fashion code revolves around the French beret.

The SAPE movement was born 25 years ago, when musician Papa Wemba decided to rebel against the country’s “authenticity” movement. These days, Sapeurs battle each other for fashion supremacy, and go to great lengths to acquire luxury labels in a country where the average annual income is $100.
