For about as long as we’ve been throwing the greatest NYC parties, we recall this man being on the NYC music scene. Not only has Nick Hook been changing the face of NY club music for years but he’s been doing it with us. This Sunday we’re putting him on again, this time for a very special rooftop edition of our infamous Dark Disco show, where he will be joined by none other than Flosstradamus and Pase Rock.
As one part of the genre-blurring group Cubic Zirconia, Nick Hook is largely responsible for the sleek synths and grimy techno-soul sound the band produces in their energetic live sets which tend to dabble in everything from disco to funk to R&B to house. Besides this Nick has been keeping himself busy over the years, frequently playing in bands and live shows for Drop the Lime, L-Vis 1990 and El-P of Company Flow. As the man says himself: he has been ‘twiddling buttons for a minute now.’
So, to get us prepped for Sunday’s show we thought we’d take a little trip down memory lane and look back at some of the shows Nick has played for us, picking out our favorites from over the years.
2008: Going back to ’08 when the ‘Korrupt’ nights were still going down, we put on Mad Decent glitch maestro Boy 8 Bit and we decided Nick would be the perfect compliment to his music. Turns out we were right.. Boy 8 Bit got the crowd going and Nick chilled them out a little, keeping it classy til the wee hours when Jubilee came on to melt everyone’s face off again. Good times!
2009: Remember that totally awesome party ‘Flashing Lights’ we used to throw?? Us too, and of course we had to have Nick play at least one. Feb 09 Nick hit the stage alongside Catchdubs, Jubilee and DJ Ayers for another unforgettable night at our favorite Dim Sum restaurant / party hole, 88 Palace. Not only was Nick on the decks but he also played live with Cubic Zirconia who were just starting to grab the public’s attention around this time.
2010: Some pretty epic shows went down this year but one of our absolute favorites of the year had to be our Memorial Day Dark Disco musical blowout. Described by ourselves as a mini-festival, this Dark Disco really took the idea of clubbing above and beyond as party-goers experienced music in a new 3D way that reminded us all why we live in NYC. Nick was there, of course, and was also joined by Actress, Ikonika, Michna, Kenny Dope, Egyptrixx and MJ Cole, to name a few.
Also in 2010 we have to mention the LuckyMe showcase that went down where revellers enjoyed back to back sets from Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, live sets from Lunice, Machinedrum and Jacques Greene as well as live performances from Cubic Zirconia and a young Azealia Banks, who we must add is now working closely with Nick as he has produced a number of tracks for our fav new rapper chick. If you haven’t already done so, check out this recent release from Azealia, which Nick co-produced with electronic legend HudMo..
2011: May we brought UK wonder-producer SBTRKT over for Dark Disco where Nick’s sleek set complimented the night perfectly as it gave us a taste of everything from heavy bass to funk. Then in November Nick graced us with his presence at Dark Disco once again, this time with his friend L-Vis 1990. 2011 was also a pretty epic year for our own Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival where Nick played before Hudson Mohawke at The Cove. The crowd loved it and seeing Nick and HudMo in such a small venue really reinforced why we love BK…and electronic music! Cubic Zirconia also played live during the festival.
2011 we also named Nick’s ‘High on Coffee Plane Mix’ as one of our top 10 of the year and it still sounds good today. You can listen here.
All that remains to be said now is Nick Hook – we salute you… and everyone else – get your tickets now for our one-off rooftop Dark Disco this Sunday, July 8th. Judging by MeanRed and Nick’s track record it’s going to be a show you don’t wanna miss!
