I’m going to make up [...]

I’m going to make up a genre right now so bear with me: Montreal Bass. With artists like Jacques Greene and Lunice creating amazingly bass heavy and perfectly produced genre crossing music with influences of r&b, hip hop, UK bass & garage, it’s no wonder Montreal’s Sibian & Faun have produced one of the heaviest tunes in perfect time for the end of the year.

With the final joint release of the year (along with Redinho) on one of our favorite british labels, Numbers, Sibian & Faun got our attention. It was only after a few listens to I’m Sorry that we realised how real of a deal these guys are. Producing what they call “future R&B” it is the easiest form of futuristic dance music to digest. The vocals trigger something familiar in anyone growing up with R&B, the bass triggers the indescribable need to dance in all living humans, and the brilliant, sexy, big production triggers the precious dopamine reserves that inspire euphoria. These guys could easily be the next “big thing”, I highly recommend keeping an eye out for any and all upcoming releases from them.

Kingdom is a special producer. [...]

Kingdom is a special producer. He is one who seems to evolve with the times while still managing to stay unique. He’s one of the handful of US based producers making truly cutting edge RnB sample littered house, bass, dubstep, and hip hop. He released his first single, Mind Reader, on Fools Gold in early 2010 and soon after made his European debut with Night Slugs. He has become the US face of the London based label and recently started a brother label based out of LA, Fade to Mind. His new Night Slugs release, Dreama EP helps solidify that he’s just getting started.

MeanRed has a long history with Kingdom, we’ve been booking him since the beginning. We collaborated with him and Dre Skull on their Club Infinity parties last year until he made the move out to LA. He is one of the artists whose grabbed us and can’t seem to do anything wrong. His DJ sets are not to be missed, mixing RnB and Hip Hop with House and Dubstep, he’s one of the most compelling djs around. Rarely, if ever, is a single person not dancing. As for his originals, we think you ought to just check it out for yourself. To describe the complexity and universal appeal of his music would be like trying to define love. Check out snippets his new Dreama EP below and buy it on Beatport.

Marc Glasser aka Dubbel Dutch [...]

Marc Glasser aka Dubbel Dutch has been a staple since 2009. Originally a New Yorker, he busted onto the scene with some wicked remixes and originals via Brooklyn’s blog/label Palms Out Sounds. His most recent release on Mixpak is his best yet and we think you need to know about it.

Glasser’s new E.P, Hymn, is just off the hook. Released on Dre Skull’s Brooklyn based MixPak Records, Hymn EP is an uplifting, heavy bottomed collection of bass tunes that force you to move. The rhythms are thoughtful and unique, the bass is perfection and it’s uniquely and almost shockingly euphoric. This combination makes the Hymn EP the most effective dancefloor collection he’s ever released. Two highlights are Heartbruk and the self-titled Hymn. Definitely worth a listen.

Half of Sepalcure and 100% [...]

Half of Sepalcure and 100% amazing, Hotflush’s Praveen Sharma (aka Braille) is someone you need to know about. Sooner than later.

We recently had Braille at Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival. He killed it. I could end it right there.

At the risk of sounding psychotic, Braille is among the best in New York right now. His sound is so unique, so futuristic, it’s amazing to think he’s right around the corner. With releases on Hotflush Records alongside contemporaries like Scuba, Joy O, George Fitzgerald, and his own project with Machinedrum: Sepalcure, Braille is on the up. His A Meaning EP released in September is superb, giving you everything you want in bass heavy house. Divinely chopped vocals, euphoric harmonies and unique rhythms. We recommend checking him out ASAP.

The reason we haven’t featured Girl Unit in our “Feature Artists” section until now is because, frankly, we thought everyone already knew. However, after this weekend at Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival, we figured we would remind you. Night Slugs’ Girl Unit is one of the best in the world right now fusing elements of Hip Hop, UK Bass, Acid House, Dubstep and just about anything else you can dance to. Not only did he destroy the dancefloor on Saturday night, but I got a chance to hang with him at WNYU radio and listen to some new unreleased tracks.

Saturday night was the RINSED @ BEMF: Fade to Mind Showcase with RINSED (Blacky II and me), Total Freedom, Kingdom, Nguzunguzu, and Girl Unit. The entire night was phenomenal, however the plateau of the evening was easily Phillip Gamble aka Girl Unit’s set. He played some new tunes that were absolutely mental as well as some all-time favorites. The evening, of course culminated with Wut which, if you’ve ever seen Phil play before, was rewinded half way through for maximum effect. When I asked him when to expect a new release, he assured me some new tunes were dropping early next year, hopefully by the end of January. On Monday night, I hung out at Natalie Kelapire’s Get Down, a weekly radio show on WNYU, to watch Phil do it all over again. The show was amazing and it was archived right here for your enjoyment. Fast forward a bit to get to the set, and make sure you have sufficient bass. Also Village Voice did a proper interview with him that you should definitely check out.

I don’t know too much [...]

I don’t know too much about Mosca. I remember hearing Gold Bricks, I See You, on Fabric’s Elevator Music last year and loving it. After doing a little research I discovered he’s been around forever in the UK, involved in every relevant dance innovation since 2004. His new record is coming out on Monday on Numbers, a personal favorite of mine, and I feel it may be the EP of the year.

The EP Done Me Wrong/ Bax comes out on Numbers on Monday. They released a snippet which is linked below. I got impatient and bootlegged and looped the tunes to play at RINSED because I truly feel the party can’t reach it’s potential without this record. The A side, Done Me Wrong is a vocal chopped slice of heaven, just super heavy bass and sex for your ears. However the B side, Bax, is something from the dance gods. Modern garage at its best. I’m gonna stop talking. Listen to the tunes.

He first caught my attention on the Dark Sky Fact Mix with his remix of Groove Theory’s Tell Me. The pulsing chords and sped up vocals only compliment the addictive rhythm section. After doing a bit more research and listening I discovered his style is just spectacular. He has the kind of taste you dream about, he has truly found his sound and is tweaking it with every new production. Don’t You is the kind of hooky vocal driven groover that’s as versatile as a tune can be. Spacey and atmospheric, but catchy and bass heavy. This guy is what bass is supposed to sound like.

So I’ve vaguely known about [...]

So I’ve vaguely known about Koreless for some time. Ever since Jacques Greene put out his mix for URB that famously (at least for me) began with the Koreless Remix of Jacques’ The Look. I always thought that tune was nuts, but I never really did any more research on him. Last week I had the pleasure of DJing with Jacques and after hearing what I thought was the best tune of the night, I peered over the CDJ and saw Koreless – MTI.

Only 19 years old and from North Wales, who would have thought this kid would be making some of the most progressive dance music around? Now based in Glasgow, this producer is killing it. He may only have 5 tunes on his soundcloud, but they are all unique, hypnotizing and plain fucking sexy. Vocals chopped so expertly, it’s sometimes hard to realize their vocals. Anyway, if you need some quick dance floor ammunition, MTI, appears to be tried and true. I played it at Le Bain on Sunday (a week later) and it ignited the dance floor again. Keep an eye out for any new releases.
